Partnering for Innovation: Researchers Solving Industry Problems

MEMKO is proud to partner with the University of Southern Queensland to host engineering students across Master’s, PhD and post-doctoral levels as part of iLAuNCH Trailblazer by co-locating students at our Melbourne head office.

This initiative brings academic research into a real-world environment, giving students hands-on experience with advanced tools, industry domain knowledge and mentorship from our team of experts.

From aerospace innovation to composite manufacturing, these industry placements showcase the fascinating research happening behind the scenes at MEMKO’s headquarters. They also reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting the next generation of engineers by providing exposure to industry and a professional engineering environment. Through these initiatives, students gain access to expert guidance from our team and hands-on experience with advanced tools and technologies.

About MEMKO

MEMKO is an engineering and technology company based in Melbourne, Australia. Established in 2007 with its origins in Aerospace, MEMKO’s services now span across multiple industries with a focus on Aerospace and Defence engineering using smart enterprise digital tools across the product life cycle management covering design, systems engineering, digital modelling, simulation, digital manufacturing and virtual twins. MEMKO is committed to building the workforce of the future, supporting many research and university clients with a combination of industry and market knowledge. MEMKO also delivers training courses for continued education in aviation and aerospace, micro credentials for upskilling in digital manufacturing and official Dassault Systèmes software certification.

Chris Mimra – Monitoring Filament Winding for Composite Manufacturing

As a Post-Doctoral research Fellow, Chris’s research focuses on improving composite manufacturing quality through process monitoring in filament winding. By using different camera systems to detect defects as they occur, his work enables real-time adjustments to the manufacturing process. The data collected is then fed back into simulation tools, helping close the loop between design, simulation and manufacturing. This approach speeds up the transition from concept to production and enhances overall quality. Chris is also integrating Python workflows with the 3DEXPERIENCE digital thread to streamline data flow and support smarter decision-making.

Ryan Stickland – Digitising Composite Repair Workflows

A PhD candidate, Ryan’s research is transforming how composite materials are repaired by moving traditionally offline processes (such as damage diagnosis, repair design, manufacturing and recertification) into the digital realm. Currently, many of these stages rely on paper documentation and lack effective information tracing. Ryan is harnessing digital twin and digital thread technologies to virtualise these workflows, in order to streamline repair operations, reduce lead times and costs, and improving outcomes for both airlines and passengers.

“MEMKO staff and resources have been the backbone of the technical solutions I’m developing to tackle real industry challenges.”

Vishnu Shankar Nair – Optimising Aircraft Patch Repair

As a PhD candidate, Vishnu focuses on optimising aircraft patch repair using digital twin technology, addressing real-world damage scenarios like bird strikes, hailstorms and foreign object impacts. By improving composite scarf repair techniques, his work aims to reduce material waste whilst ensuring adequate structural integrity is restored, thereby increasing overall MRO efficacy. Ultimately, this will put forward a smarter, safer and more efficient way to maximise aircraft fleet time in the air, minimising passenger travel disruptions at the airport.

“MEMKO’s technical support and industry expertise have been instrumental in shaping my understanding of MRO operations and aerospace design requirements.”

Nathakorn Prajunban – Enhancing FEA for Digital Twin Integration

Completing his Master’s in Engineering, Nathakorn’s is researching more efficient structural analysis and smarter digital engineering practices. His focus is enhancing the Finite element analysis (FEA) to be more versatile by using submodelling technique to discretise large structures. The enhanced FEA will be able to integrate with Digital Twin to enable more rapid workflow with higher accuracy.

“MEMKO gives me the experience I never got before. The team not only supports the technical aspects of my research but also understands the academic journey. Working in an industry environment has given me a head start before I begin my own career after graduation.”
