Successful NIFTI Testing at RAAF Base Edinburgh

NIFTI—Non-Intrusive Flight Test Instrumentation—is a compact, aircraft-independent wireless sensing system designed by flight test crews. It collects environmental and structural data via sensor nodes that are adhesively mounted to an aircraft’s structure, all configurable through an intuitive app.

Recently, members of the NIFTI team visited the Air Warfare Centre at RAAF Base Edinburgh to conduct a series of successful store release tests using NIFTI Accelerometer Nodes. RAAF Base Edinburgh is a Defence super-base, one of only two in Australia. Home to 3,500 personnel from the Australian Army and the Royal Australian Air Force, the base is the centre of the nation’s military intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and electronic warfare capabilities.

The testing involved the installation of multiple NIFTI nodes on the store, along with an additional node mounted on the aircraft pylon. This configuration enabled the precise measurement of dynamic forces acting on both the store and the aircraft during simulated release events.

About MEMKO

MEMKO is an engineering and technology company based in Melbourne, Australia. Established in 2007 with its origins in Aerospace, MEMKO’s services now span across multiple industries with a focus on Aerospace and Defence engineering using smart enterprise digital tools across the product life cycle management covering design, systems engineering, digital mock-up, simulation, digital manufacturing and virtual twin. MEMKO is committed to building the workforce of the future, supporting many research and university clients with a combination of industry and market knowledge. MEMKO also delivers training courses for continued education in aviation and aerospace, micro credentials for upskilling in digital manufacturing and official Dassault Systèmes software certification.

These tests play a critical role in validating the safe integration of stores with specific fighter aircraft platforms. By capturing high-fidelity data on structural and environmental conditions, the NIFTI system helps ensure the integrity of both the aircraft and the store—ultimately supporting pilot safety and mission readiness.

The data collected during the trials was used to support airworthiness certification and will also inform future enhancements to the NIFTI system, further strengthening its role in modern flight test instrumentation.

We’re proud to support the ongoing innovation and safety of Australia’s air defence capabilities.
