Exploring Model-Based Systems Engineering for Cyberworthiness in Canberra

On Thursday 16th of November, MEMKO Systems successfully hosted a Networking event discovering Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) for Cyberworthiness at Crowne Plaza Canberra, ACT, Australia.

The event featured three keynote presentations from leaders in the cybersecurity and systems engineering areas, which attracted multiple industry professionals. We discussed how MBSE can enhance the cyberworthiness of critical infrastructure in the future, the use of Cyber Evaluation and Management Toolkit (CEMT), and the collaboration for effective MBSE adoption.

Brenton Dodd was the host of the event, giving an overview into MEMKO and its commitment to building the MBSE community in Australia.

The event began with two speakers from CSIRO, Dr Stephen Craig and Dr Surya Nepal. They delivered ‘Net Zero Transformation: Building Security and Resilience into the Future of Critical Infrastructure through MBSE’.

Stuart Fowler from Department of Defence continued by showcasing how to apply the Cyber Evaluation and Management Toolkit (CEMT) as a model-based approach to cybersecurity assessments.

Finally, Sam Mancarella from MEMKO emphasized the importance of collaboration as a crucial starting point for the effective adoption of MBSE.

It was fantastic to see everyone contributing to the discussion and Q&A sessions, solving the question of how MBSE can improve cyberworthiness for complex systems and infrastructure.

Keynote Speakers

Dr Stephen Craig | Smart Energy Mission Lead at CSIRO

Dr Stephen Craig is the Lead for the Smart Energy Mission, currently in development at CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency. Stephen has over 25 years of experience in applied research, strategy development and commercial innovation in systems engineering, digital technologies, and communications. Prior to joining CSIRO, Stephen led the national centre of excellence for Digital Engineering at Boeing Defence Australia. Besides, he was earlier Head of Strategy and Business Development at a spatial data analytics start-up.

Dr Surya Nepal | CIPR Mission Lead & Data61 Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO

Dr Surya Nepal is a Senior Principal Research Scientist at CSIRO Data61 and the Mission Lead for Critical Infrastructure Protection and Resilience Mission. He has been with CSIRO since 2000 and currently leads the cybersecurity and quantum systems research group. His primary research focuses on developing and implementing technologies in distributed systems, specifically on security, privacy and trust. Besides, he has more than 250 peer-reviewed publications to his credit. Furthermore, he is a member of the editorial boards of IEEE Transactions on Service Computing and ACM Transactions on Internet Technology.

Stuart Fowler | Cybersecurity Engineer at Department of Defence

Stuart Fowler is a professional systems engineer with more than a decade of experience in the Australian Defence industry. Moreover, he is a cybersecurity doctoral candidate at the University of New South Wales. He has spent his career designing complex engineering systems for the Australian Defence Force, with a particular focus on ensuring those systems are able to operate effectively in a contested cyber environment. His current focus is developing a methodology for evaluating and assuring the cybersecurity of complex systems that moves the industry beyond the application of control frameworks and best-practice guidance into the future.

Sam Mancarella | Director of Systems Engineering at MEMKO

Sam Mancarella qualified in Computer Engineering and Science. He has over 25 years’ experience as a cyber systems expert, ranging from digital transformation, IT systems development, software engineering and technology portfolio management. Sam is an expert in Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Enterprise Architecture, helping customers adopt industry standards and best practices to deliver sustainable competitive advantage in multiple industries.
